ITC is the largest independent electricity transmission company in the U.S. – owner and operator of high-voltage transmission systems in eight states. ITC connects a variety of customers at transmission-level voltages. These include large generation and distribution utilities, municipal utility systems, rural electricity utility cooperatives, and large commercial and industrial customers. Through its three operating companies – ITC Michigan, ITC Midwest and ITC Great Plains - ITC provides utilities, and municipalities with low-cost energy to power their communities.

Since its founding in 2003, ITC has invested billions of dollars to modernize and strengthen the grid. Those investments have delivered measurable results: ITC’s systems routinely rank among the top performers nationally for reliability. By hardening infrastructure against severe weather, mitigating cyber and physical risks, and maintaining assets proactively, ITC helps deliver dependable power while controlling overall system costs. For developers and employers, reliability reduces uncertainty and lowers risk when making long-term location decisions.

A reliable and efficient electric transmission system plays a vital role in economic development, sustaining current economic activity while enabling future investment, growth, and job creation. Through ongoing system evaluation and demand forecasting, ITC proactively identifies and delivers the infrastructure upgrades needed to support continued progress.

ITC works closely with developers, economic development organizations, and public officials to understand project needs and align transmission planning accordingly.
Through an independent regional planning process governed by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), transmission solutions are evaluated, approved, and prioritized with a focus on reliability, cost-effectiveness, and regional benefits. Once approved, ITC designs, builds, operates, and maintains infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale development and long-term economic activity.

Looking ahead, ITC is helping lead the buildout of next-generation backbone transmission through MISO’s Long Range Transmission Planning initiative. These projects are designed to strengthen regional reliability and expand access to cost-effective energy resources. For Midwestern communities, which means greater competitiveness for energy-intensive industries and improved readiness for future growth.

Just as important as infrastructure is partnership. ITC’s Local Government & Community Affairs team works directly with local leaders, regulators, and residents throughout the lifecycle of each project. From permitting and public outreach to construction and operations, ITC recognizes that successful projects depend on strong community relationships.

Across the Midwest, economic growth depends on power that is reliable, resilient, and thoughtfully planned. By investing in infrastructure, collaborating early with developers, and partnering with communities, ITC is helping ensure the region remains powered for opportunity.
