The Mid-America Economic Development Council (EDC) is re-opening its scholarship program, now funded by the Michael P. Hickey Foundation. The scholarship program is named in memory of Michael P. Hickey, a champion for economic development in the U.S. and especially the Mid-America region. Hickey was dedicated to ethical and honest business, and his legacy endures through the company he founded, Hickey & Associates, and the Foundation.

This scholarship program is available for Mid-America Economic Development Council members and non-members, but applicants new to economic development will be given preference. Applicants will be evaluated based on their interest in economic development overall, as well as their interest in the Mid-America Economic Development Council organization. This year’s scholarship program is designed to assist with professional mentoring throughout the year through on-demand mentoring, mock site-selector meetings, and involvement in Mid-America EDC committees. Recipients also earn complimentary attendance to Mid-America EDC’s Annual Conference: Power, Progress, and Possibility. The winners can attend the conference through its duration from August 31 to September 2, 2026 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

To apply for a scholarship, applicants must submit a completed application form, found on the Mid-America EDC website, and a one-page essay about their background, accolades, and need for the scholarship. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to one of the board members from their state to advise that they intend to apply for this year’s scholarship. Each state’s board members can also answer any questions that applicants may have about the Mid-America EDC organization. Board Member information can be found on the Mid-America EDC website, please reach out to maedc@assnoffices.com for email contacts. Applications are due no later than May 27, 2026.

Mid-America EDC Scholarship Committee Co-Chair and Board Member from Wisconsin, Donna Walker, commented, “Investing in the next generation of economic development leaders is critical to building strong, vibrant communities across our region.
