Best Practices Conerence Scholarships

The Mid-America Economic Development Council is pleased to announce that we are now accepting scholarship nominations for the eighth annual Bob Ady Scholarship Program – Best Practices Conference Scholarships.  Please note that this year, we will offer scholarships for both conferences – Best Practices in May and Competitiveness Conference in December.  December Conference Scholarship information will be released later this Spring.

The scholarship program is named in memory of Bob Ady, a champion for economic development in the U.S. and especially the Midwest.  The purpose of this scholarship program is to assist new economic development professionals in furthering their professional development.  This program is available for Mid-America EDC members and non-members, and applicants new to economic development will be given preference.  Applicants will be evaluated based on their interest in economic development overall, as well as their interest in the Mid-America EDC organization.

The Mid-America EDC is a multi-state association dedicating to being the leading resource for education, making connections, and sharing best practices for economic development professionals.

The Mid-America EDC provides economic development professionals with the following:

  • Resources aimed at helping the economic development professional to excel
  • Recognition of quality economic development programs and marketing
  • Awards program to reward excellence
  • Promotion of the Mid-America EDC region to site selectors and industries to help raise the level of awareness
  • Networking opportunities among regional members to promote idea exchange and partnering

Bob Ady Scholarship recipients will be awarded a complimentary registration for the 2020 Best Practices Conference to be held May 13-15, 2020 in Flint, Michigan.  This unique conference is an excellent chance to learn from your peers across the Mid-America EDC region.  Topics from crisis preparation and management to workforce to placemaking will be discussed – plus much more!  Conference attendees will also have multiple opportunities to network with colleagues and experience all that Flint has to offer.  Please note that scholarship recipients are responsible for travel costs – including hotel, parking and transportation; however, a limited amount of travel expenses will be included with each scholarship.  Scholarship recipients selected will be notified with full details. 

Applicants are encouraged to reach out to one of the board members from his/her state to advise that he/she is applying for this year’s scholarship.  Each state’s board members can also answer any questions that applicants may have about the Mid-America EDC organization.  Board Member information is found at http://www.midamericaedc.org/midamericaedc/about/board-of-directors/?cat=board.

The Mid-America Economic Development Council will review all scholarship nominations and will contact the designated person (as indicated on the nomination form) no later than March 16, 2020 to notify whether the recipient has been chosen to receive a scholarship.  Recipients are eligible to receive a Bob Ady scholarship once.  Nominees not selected are eligible to be nominated the following year.

COLUMBUS, OH, SEPTEMBER 30, 2019:  The Mid-America Economic Development Council recently selected the 2019 recipients for the semi-annual Bob Ady Scholarship Program.  The scholarship program is named in memory of Bob Ady, a champion for economic development in the U.S. and especially the Mid-America region.

This scholarship program is available for Mid-America Economic Development Council members and non-members.  Applicants were evaluated based on their interest in economic development overall, as well as their interest in the Mid-America Economic Development Council organization.  This year’s scholarship program is designed to assist with attendance to both of Mid-America EDC’s 2019 Conferences – the Best Practices Conference to be held July 17-19 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Mid-America Competitiveness Conference & Site Selector Forum to be held December 8-10 in Chicago, Illinois.

“Each Bob Ady Scholarship award winner brings new thinking and a fresh perspective to the field of economic development.  These are exactly the qualities that keep the field relevant and pertinent even in times of sweeping economic, political, technical, and social change,” said Janet Ady, Bob’s daughter and President and CEO of Ady Advantage.  “Over 50 promising economic development professionals have now been awarded scholarships to attend Mid-America Economic Development Association conferences, bringing what they learn back to their home states and communities to help advance economic development across the country.”

As stated by Keith Gillenwater, Mid-America EDC board member and Chair of the 2019 Bob Ady Scholarship committee.  “Mid-America EDC is thrilled to continue our partnership with Janet and the entire Ady family who graciously support professional development in our economic development field by underwriting the Bob Ady Scholarship program.  This scholarship allows us to support economic development professionals from across the Midwest as they strive to improve their knowledge and skills in our field while simultaneously networking with peers from across our region.”
